A fantastically detailed picture of Avenyn in Gothenburg in 1964. Zoom in to see all the fantastic cars, trams and people in motion. In the background we see Götaplatsen with the concert hall and the Poseidon statue.

The avenue is actually called Kungsportsavenyn - or if you want to be really particular: Kungsportsavenyen. The name Kungsportsavenyen was the original name from the city plan changes on September 5, 1867. After many discussions and reversals in the decisions, about thirty famous Gothenburgers, tenants and homeowners came together and demanded back Kungsportsavenyen as the name of the new avenue when they had discovered that they would be obliged to pay for the change of their addresses again.

The controversy that formed the basis of the previous discussion was the designation aveny, which was perceived as foreign. The first parts of the avenue were built around 1872 through the 'Kalmarehus building'. The street was dominated by large exclusive residential buildings and was an elegant and popular promenade that began at Kungsportsbron in the north and ended at Lorensbergs Park in the south. Here, men in high hats and women in their most beautiful skirts had their Sunday walks. The first store was not opened until 1914, a grocery store at No. 24, the Sturefors district.
