A modern French woman in Paris in the 1800th century. She is wearing a black dress with a marked waist and draped turnip (a metal stand worn under the skirt at the back). The quality and style of the clothes reveal the woman's high social and economic status. The painting depicts the woman as a power factor and status symbol in 1800th century France.

The artist behind the painting was Édouard Manet andthe actress Ellen André was the model for it. Ellen was a popular model for many Impressionists in the 1870s, not least Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
