Engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel stands in front of the chains of the ship The Great Eastern which he has designed. The photograph was taken in 1857 and is a depiction of the engineer as a hero. Isambard was behind large parts of the industrial revolution in England in the middle of the 1800th century and was known for his magnificent constructions as well as his personality. The Great Eastern was the crown of his work, the great pride of the nation, and by far the largest ship ever built at this time.

Isambard was a man of humble demeanor and strength but with an extremely nervous energy. He was never seen without a cigar in the corner of his mouth and a cigar box hanging in a brace over his back. He was known for his determination and was not afraid to get involved in all aspects of a job. Something that can be seen on his dirty suit pants.
