Norwegian Crown Prince Olav sails in Sandhamn, Stockholm with his yacht Norna in 1928. The Crown Prince was an elite-level sailor and this year he visited the sailing competition Guldpokal-sailings in Sandhamn. Shortly afterwards, he himself participated in the Sandhamn regatta.

Olav was born Prince of Denmark, but when his father took the throne as King of Norway in 1905, he lost his title and instead became Crown Prince of Norway. Olav took over the throne as King Olav V of Norway in 1957 and married his cousin Princess Märtha of Sweden.

In connection with the German occupation of Norway during World War II, the Norwegian royal family and especially the then Crown Prince Olav came to play an important role for the courage and resistance of the Norwegian people.
