Poster with the painting Gustav Vasa's entry into Stockholm in 1523. Gustav Vasa (1496-1560) led the Swedes' revolt against the Danish king of the union and succeeded after receiving help from the Hanseatic League. King Kristian had been driven to Copenhagen and the union between the Nordic kingdoms was dissolved forever.

On Midsummer's Day in 1523, Gustav Vasa, who was elected king, marched into the capital. He is greeted with pomp and circumstance when he rides into the Palace in Stockholm.
