Posts with the painting He became sharper and angrier in his mood, as time went on. John Bauer is the artist behind the painting that was published with Elsa Beskow's saga When the sorceress took care of the king's big city in the fairy tale collection Among Elves and Trolls. In the picture we see a magician outside the gate to his home - the magic mountain. John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling.

Trolls are a natural being from Norse mythology which, according to legend, originated from the giants of antiquity. The trolls usually live in mountains and have been described as everything from big and furry with long noses, ears and tails to being able to look like any human being. Although humans have sometimes had good exchanges with trolls as labor or advisors, they are seldom helpful and can be dangerous. According to Old Norse writings, the first trolls appeared in the Nordic countries during the Viking Age. Folktales that the forests and the inaccessible mountains were populated by evil beings fell into it for several hundred years. Laws were even enacted for trolls.
