Poster with John Bauer's painting The Troll Herb from 1912. A troll with long, green hair hands a magic herb to the boy in the woods.

The back of the original painting reads: "I give you a piece of a magic herb, which no other but I can findThe picture was published with the saga The boy who was never afraid by Alfred Smedberg in Among Gnomes and Trolls in 1912.

The story is about a boy who sets out to find the croft's only cow that the trolls have taken. Because he was not afraid, he managed to get on well with the horrible creatures he met in the forest, and with their help he managed to free the cow.

John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling.
