Poster with The Lady with the Veil from 1768 by Alexander Roslin. The Lady with the Veil is one of the National Museum's most beloved paintings and the Swedish artist Alexander Roslin was one of the 1700th century's most hired portrait painters.

The woman in the portrait looks lovingly and secretively at the artist, partly hidden by a black silk veil. No wonder - the woman in the picture is the love of Alexander Roslin's life and wife Suzanne Roslin who was herself a talented French artist. In the picture, she is holding a fan. Fans were widely used by women in the 1700th century. They were used to appear secretive and feminine at social events but also to send secret messages to the spectator. Opening, closing and turning your fan in different ways meant different things. In the picture, Suzanne has folded her fan and stroked it against her cheek, which is believed to mean I love you.

As a viewer, it is easy to be seduced and charmed by the charismatic and beautiful woman. Suzanne tragically died only 38 years old. Roslin came to paint five different portraits of his beautiful wife over the years - all equally sincerely loving.
