Poster with the painting The Princess and the Troll by John Bauer from 1913. Beautiful Bianca Maria walks through the deep forest one summer evening with her father and mother troll.

The picture was published with Helena Nyblom's saga The Changelings in the fairy tale collection "Among Gnomes and Trolls". The story is about a toll father who became so fond of little princess Bianca Maria that he steals her from the cradle and puts his own troll child there instead. The troll child and the princess Bianca Maria grow up and neither of them fits in with their new families. When they are old enough, they both flee back to their original homes.

John Bauer's interpretation of the trolls as a natural being is clear in their true-to-nature shapes and colors. The contrast to the princess represents innocence and naivety. Bauer's works have shaped generations of children and their perceptions of the forest and its various fairy tale creatures. He has therefore had a great influence on Nordic folklore and storytelling. Curious to know more about trolls? Read more here: The Trolls of Domberget.
