Canvas with August Malmström's most famous painting, Dancing Fairies from 1866. Until 1872, the original was owned by King Charles XV. The painting depicts a weather phenomenon where moist air condenses and forms microscopic water droplets that remain floating. In ancient folklore, it was believed that the fog was dancing fairies. According to folklore, fairies lived in the wild and could be seen dancing on hills, mountains and forests. Fairies were beautiful but dangerous and could make people sick.

In the painting we see a meandering morning mist with fairies dancing hand in hand like a thin veil through a moonlit, quiet landscape. Trees stand like dark shadows against the sky.

Artist: August Malmström | Created: 1866.
