Poster with an old illustration of an Eurasian hoopoe. The illustration was drawn by the von Wright brothers and published in the early 1900th century in the book Swedish Birds According to Nature And On Stone Drawn. In the picture we see, among other things, the text Upupa Epops, latin for the name of the species.

Due to the bird's striking appearance and loud sound, it has gained a prominent place in mythology and folk beliefs. There are several stories about how this bird warns people of danger. In folklore this bird has been considered to herald both war and famine when its sound was interpreted as: "Up! Up! Up! Out! Out!".

In classical Chinese poetry This bird is usually described as a messenger from heaven, who often carries news in the spring. In Switzerland, it used to be thought that you could cure colds if you drank the ashes of an Eurasian hoopoe mixed with wine. In One Thousand and One Nights it says that one can get anyone to tell their secrets by placing an Eurasian hoopoe's heart under the person's head when he sleeps. In the Qur'an, there is a story about how King Solomon had an Eurasian hoopoe on his travels because it found underground springs of water.
