Gustaf Adolf's square in Gothenburg at the end of the 1800th century. In the picture we see Norra Hamngatan and Stora Hamnkanalen. Straight ahead is Gothenburg City Hall and the old District Court in the building to its right. In the background we see the tower of the German Church.

All these buildings, including the harbor canal, are very old and date from when Gothenburg was founded in 1621. The town hall was completed in 1672 and was designed by the famous architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. In 1661, he was appointed Sweden's and Stockholm's first city architect. He has also designed Drottningsholm's castle. He was the father of Nicodemus Tessin the Youngerknown as the architect behind Stockholm's castle and was one of the great architects of the baroque in Sweden.
