A very old photograph of Norra and Södra Hamngatorna in Gothenburg at the end of the 1800th century. In the picture we see the large channel Stora Hamnkanalen and to the left, the German church.

A little further back to the left in the picture is Gustav Adolf's square and today also the shopping mall Nordstan. A beautiful picture that shows how smaller sailboats with cargo went far into the canals before. The large channel, Stora Hamnkanalen, began to be built as early as the 1620s on behalf of Gothenburg's founder Gustav II Adolf. It would "serve the maritime freight traffic of smaller ships, which came with grain and other necessities." Until the 1900th century, many private individuals had their boats in Stora Hamnkanalen, but it no longer exists.
