Wall mural with the painting The boy who was never afraid by John Bauer.

In the picture, we see a large troll squatting in the woods outside his den and in front of a brave little boy. "No sicken little putty bags!" shouted the troll greedily.

The picture was published with the saga The boy who was never afraid by Alfred Smedberg in Among Gnomes and Trolls in 1912. The story is about a boy Nisse who sets out to find the croft's only dairy cow that the troll has taken. Since he was not afraid, he managed to get on well with the horrific creatures he met during the journey in the forest, and with their help he managed to free the cow from the greedy troll.

In old Nordic folklore, trolls were thieves and stole both food and drink and often other valuables. Trole often looked like ordinary people. In fact, they could also be beautiful, although they were often revealed by their tails that often protruded under their skirts or through a trouser leg. It was the artist John Bauer who gave us the image of trolls as ugly natural beings with big noses.
