Brother Saint Martin and the three trolls is a famous painting by John Bauer. The picture was first published together with a fairy tale in Among Gnomes and Trolls in 1913. The story is about The monk Sankt Martin who has gone from Sigtuna to Bergslagen in Sweden to speak about the god he believes in. But the people there did not want to listen. On the way home he got lost in the forest and met trolls, fairies and other creatures in the deep, dark forest. In the picture we see him wearing his hood holding up a hand against three trolls.

John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling.
