Svenska Kraftekvilibrister was a famous duo formed in 1895 by weightlifter Arvid Andersson and gymnast Axel Rylander. Many of our historically famous power men had interesting lives. The most famous of these was Arvid Andersson, "Starke Arvid", who was perhaps the strongest of all power men (on the left in the picture). Arvid and Axel toured around the world and captivated the audience with some of the incredible numbers you can see in the picture. They lifted orchestras, horses and cars. They tore off thick ropes, broke iron, and struck rough nails through planks. They broke out of cages and met bears in wrestling. One of Starke Arvid's most impressive numbers was to balance an entire platform with a piano and pianist on his forehead. In 1900, Arvid challenged the Russian-American Rolandow in New York, for the title of the world's strongest man. Although the competition was in Rolandow's favor, Arvid managed to defeat him.

At the end of the 1800th century, it became very popular to go and see power men. The interest lasted until the first half of the 1900th century. The powerful men were the sports stars of the time and the ambassadors who represented our country.
