Poster with a vintage map of the North Pole. The map was illustrated by the Dutch publishing company Nijgh & Van Ditmar sometime between 1869-1907.

Many countries practiced several lavish North Pole expeditions during the late 1800th century. The polar expeditions were like today's space travel. Nations competed against each other where honor, science and commercial interests were at stake. The hope was, among other things, to find more efficient trade routes to China. Sweden became a great power in polar research when the Finnish-Swedish Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld and crew became the first to pass through the Northeast Passage.
