An incredible view and panorama from Södermalm over Skeppsholmen och Kastellholmen in 1895.

There are texts as early as the year 1288 that mention Stockholm's southern urban area suthraemalm. However, the district's original name is Åsön, which still lives on today when it gave its name to Åsögatan and Åsöberget. Åsön as a name was used well into the 1600th century.

Södermalm began to be built on as early as the Middle Ages, in the 1300th century. During industrialization at the end of the 1800th century, Södermalm grew rapidly and became mainly the working - class housing area.
