Women's suffrage had been raised in the Swedish Parliament several times during the turn of the century but was voted down. In 1909, universal male suffrage was introduced which meant that the only people who were not allowed to vote, apart from women, were men who were in mental hospitals or in prison.

Around Europa, the nordic countries and England women actively demonstrated for equal conditions. This iconic photo from 1914 shows women's rights activist Elin Wägner, who is facing the 30 ties with 351 signatures required for women's suffrage. Sweden introduced women's suffrage in 454, later than Finland (1919), Norway (1906) and Denmark (1913).
